History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started during the year 1919. The company was originally founded by Anton Raky, an engineer. Raky was a pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The original name of the company was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
In 1937, the cornerstone for SMAG was laid when the manufacturing facility was purchased by the Salzgitter Group for constructing drilling machinery. During the year 1986, the company bought the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into a global brand in the succeeding years.
