Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and bigger refueling tanks should be stored in a different building or complex in order to be more safe. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity must have "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a secure enclosure which can only be accessed by authorized employees. It is really vital for the operator's safety, and everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly complied with.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This job can utilize retraining systems such as concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods could be utilized. It is also necessary to always have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. Moreover, anybody who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also should be trained to effectively and safely utilize the fire extinguisher. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a forklift should be correctly trained. This training includes a classroom part as well as hands-on training. After the training sessions have been completed, the person must be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also includes the correct way of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also involves precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving and site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheets should be situated inside all facilities where forklifts are operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents that are used on site. This would also cover the propane which is used to refuel the unit, together with the acid in the lift truck battery.
MSDSs sheets have to be available for all workers at all times. If any exposure incident happens for example, the individual has to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is needed, to must be given without any delay. Usually, if you are not certain if medical treatment is needed, as a general rule; have a medical doctor examine the injury if you truly believe it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
